The primary role of the Business Development Manager is to prospect for new clients by networking, cold calling or other means of generating interest from potential clients. They must then plan persuasive approaches and pitches that will convince potential clients to do business with the company. Strategic planning is a key part of this job description, since it is the business manager’s responsibility to develop the pipeline of new business coming in to the company.


Manages new business functions and activities
o Assists in recommending, establishing, and being accountable to implement strategic and / or tactical new business marketing plans designed to achieve agency goals and objectives
o Assists in defining goals for new business development
o Advocates knowledge of and supports the agency’s mission, culture, confidentiality, standards, etc.
o Initiates and manages effective relationships with selected, developed leads on an ongoing basis
o Manages multiple new business prospect engagements for themselves and key agency executives
o Works collaboratively with New Business and other agency teams on RFPs, meetings, presentations,etc.
o Assist in keeping track of key team progress, helping to write recap reports for managementas needed
o Represent the agency at appropriate conferences, meetings, and events, and direct agency principalsto those critical to high level exposure
o Oversee and control the budget and implementation of communications programs
o Develop prospect list, helping to develop outreach materials as needed
o To research, identify, target and refine prospects
o Researches, analyzes and monitors financial, technological and demographic factors to capitalize on new market / business leads and opportunities
New Business Pitches
o Manages effective relationships with developed leads on a continuous basis
Manages multiple new business prospect engagements
o Advise New Business team and other key agency leaders on best practices, coaching everyonethrough the pitch process to best present the agency to potential clients
o Organize and manage all activities in preparation for presentations (using appropriate agency resources), including: background reading on prospect, product, technology and market; samples of allprospect literature and advertising competitive advertising; competitive agency background, if appropriate,or other materials as deemed necessary- or helpful by sales manager or agency principals
o Represent agency at presentations as requested by agency principals.
o Follow through with all presentations, including follow-up letters, proposals, etc.
o Introductory or Credential Meetings
Work with key agency leaders in developing agenda, format and materials for such initial meetings
Manage team Managers in Coordinators in developing logistical plans and executing key meetingresponsibilities
o Subsequent Meetings/Presentations
Work as the New Business leader of a pitch, coordinating with Managers and key agency leaders to execute necessary tasks for pitch efforts
o Spearhead RFP development, work with Managers and other departments (Proofing, Studio,Production) to develop RFP materials for prospect delivery in a timely manner
o Develop RFP content, adapting previously used material and creating new material as needed
Agency promotion
o Set goals/directions with Director and direct the communications agencies to fulfill goals
o Provide input on recommended agency support materials and promotional tools and initiate thedevelopment of those tools through the agency in tandem with Director
o Watch for and communicate promotional or editorial opportunities to agency principals and departmentheads gathered from outside contacts and field experience

MBA degree or equivalent practical experience
4-7 years of work experience, preferably in a business development or media/creative agency position
